I would be willing to bet that the worm and sector was designed with the intent to not transmit sudden tire and wheel jerk for the side back to the steering wheel. (Kind of like the worm and gear of the winch mentioned below). It would be dangerous otherwise on a truck like a Power-Wagon when driven off-road where all kinds of rocks, logs, ruts, can grab and yank on a front wheel.
