I should also mention that whether a worm gear provides any feedback to the input side is dependent on the spiral angle of the gear arrangement. The worm and sector for a winch should be designed with an angle that will prevent any feedback, so that the load being winched cannot backdrive the input shaft. The gears on a steering box, on the other hand, should have an angle that allows the road to backdrive the whole steering setup, so that the tires and steering wheel will straighten and center themselves after making a turn.
