Back fire

My 48 wdx has sat for a few years , when I parked it it was running very well , so I got a wild hair and decided to get it back on the road , rebuilt the carb new steel fuel lines new tank new plugs plug wires re set the points set the timing and that old truck wants to back fire through the carb like a old Johnny poppper, the truck has been change over to 12 volt with a ford Motorola alternator, my question is could a bad alternator be causing it to back fire ?
