9 times out of 10, it's a lean fuel mixture that causes an engine to back fire. If your attempting to start it and if your spraying starter fluid to either get it to run or keep it running, or if back firing while driving, then that's the problem. Check the carb. to see fuel is entering it, float level, and main jet is clear.

I just helped Nick get his truck running so it could be transported and it was doing a lot of back firing. We found the main jet had plugged from setting several months, after cleaning it, it ran fine.
