Did it backfire before new timing chain. If not, I would suggest you check to see if you got the valve train timed correctly. Ie is the timing chain correctly installed. Did you mess with the oil pump? If so you could have the distributor installed in the wrong position. Again put a vacuum tester on the engine and see what it says. Vacuum testers are dirt cheap and can tell you so much.
