Osage Orange. Up here in the Midwest it goes by the name 'hedge' or 'hedge apple'. I've used it as kindling in the woodstove, but it's so dense and hard that it'll burn a hole through the cast iron if you don't mix it with a softer wood. It also sparks the chainsaw like red elm will.
A local farmer got tired of replacing his fence along side the road whenever someone lost it on the curve. So he sunk a twelve inch by seven foot hedge trunk into the ground about four foot down and hasn't had to fix a fence since. Took out a few cars and a truck or two.
This stuff is hard. Old timers say hedge will even make good wheel bearings, but I can't quite buy that one. Should work real good for the bed of a truck, if that trips your fancy. Chewie
