Yes, very dense stuff. It was so dense that it would not even swell under saltwater after many years. We had to use a boring bar with a carbide tip to cut it. I am not sure if it grows anywhere other than Africa. I heard it was very expensive. I believe most ships are now using conventional babbit bearings with a mechanical seal. I have a small piece at home that I use with a hammer to drive out bearings and such.
