The wood that you speak of was in used in mines and plants up until a few years ago , it had to be machined like steel. A friend had a piece that was 2 1/2 feet across and four feet long , it took all one day and several chains for the chain saws to cut it in half. One man can barely move this chopping block and you cannot drive an axe into it far enough for it to stand on it's own.
