Well, I can't agree that leather seals leak. At the link is an image of my 3rd member that has a leather seal and worn yoke. As you can see, it's fairly dry and it's been installed for a number of years. I think the problem with them leaking is we don't know how to properly install them. Any leather seal that is sold dry requires soaking over night and then working the seal to limber it up or they will leak and I think the second step is one that is missed. To limber the seal, you soak it, then roll the seal with pressure applied by a smooth bar to make the seal soft and pliable. If you miss the 2nd step, you'll have a leaker. The other item missed is the pinion/yoke splines. You need to apply sealer 1/2 inch from the end on the yoke and make sure it's spread around the end and washer surface, oil can leak out between the splines giving the impression you have a leaking seal.

I'll take a leather seal any day especially one packed in cosmoline.
