yes the 36 inch tires are why. in WW2 the 3/4 tons with 9.00 16s only had the 8.75" diff for a matter of months before the upgraded to the 9 5/8" diff. because 8.75" broke too easy. lots of mass in a 9.00 plus the extra 5 inches in height puts way more strain on the gears. sometimes you even see 1/2 tons with 3/4 ton axles that were installed while still in military use.
