Slant 6 questions

I've been poking around the Internet for something resembling our PIF for a slant 6 and haven't found it. I don't have any manuals for anything with a slant 6 in it either. Maybe someone here knows off the top of their head:

Where is the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley (harmonic damper)? I've looked closely and can't see anything, but I do see a sort of "half-moon" space about 2" long carved out of the front face of the edge of the pulley.

What should the timing spec be, assuming I can find the mark?

What's a reasonable manifold vacuum at idle? I'm seeing 14" at idle, which seems lower than I thought I remembered it being a couple years ago.

It's hard to start, idles rough, but runs smoothly at speed. If I open the throttle quickly, it hesitates badly, then comes up to speed, and backfires through the carburetor half the time.

I suspect a vacuum leak due to the rough idle, but haven't found it yet. Vacuum advance works if I suck on the hose. I don't feel any vacuum on the nipple on the carburetor base, though. The only vacuum hoses are to the spark advance and the PCV valve. Accelerator pump squirts fuel in, but I don't know if it's enough.

Is it feasible to set the timing just by "feel" (smoothness, idle speed, inches of vacuum, etc) without regard to the timing marks, in case there aren't any or the harmonic damper has slipped, which is apparently a common problem?
