Can't find any vacuum leaks, blowing propane around all the likely spots. Choke does not work, making it hard to start. Will probably put a manual choke on it. The one spark plug I took out looks okay (kind of black, but not burned), but will check each one and do a compression test tomorrow. Cap and rotor look okay. Has an electronic ignition (no points). With a timing light on it, a mark on the crank pulley jumps around randomly by an inch or so at idle. I can advance the spark as far as it will go and it only makes it run smoother. Have not tried road-testing it in that position. Idle mixture screw has little effect except if screwed all the way in. Can't find a "max vacuum" point. Vacuum advance to distributor is indeed set up so the throttle has to be opened slightly to allow vacuum in. I don't recognize the kind of carburetor and can't find anything on it that says. The only cast-in number on it says 6K4573. Since it's always had a hesitation, I've always wondered if it even has the right carb. The guys who put that engine in glued the spark plug wires in place with silicone because they kept falling off, so I have my doubts about what else they didn't get right.

So far, there's nothing obvious to cause the severe hesitation. It's strange that the distributor wants to be advanced as far as it will go. I'm beginning to wonder about a stretched timing chain -- not something to dig into right now. Any easy way to check that? Pull the valve cover and watch the push rods while rocking the cranky? I don't even know how to rock the crank on this, because the fan won't turn it and there's no nut or anything to put a wrench on in the middle of the crack pulley.
