If you installed roller bearings on the top, you need to set preload by feel. There is no exact science to it. After assembly you need to grab the top of the knuckle housing and turn it from stop to stop with one hand. This will be done without the felt seals in place. You should feel a decent amount of resistance when you do this, but it shouldn’t take a great amount of effort to turn it either. If it takes a great amount of effort, or you feel a bumping in the bearings when you turn it, add a shim and try again. If it’s loose enough that it moves when you take your hand away, you need to remove a shim.
