I did a lot of reading about Dot3, Dot4, and Dot5 when I replaced all of the brake components on my '47. For me, the cons of Dot5 outweighed the pros. I usually have to replace a wheel cylinder every few years because of moisture accumulating below the bleeder screw and rusting and pitting the bore. And I have been running Dot3 forever.

(I know Powerwagonjohn, you are going to tell me to sleeve my cylinders with stainless steel). I agree that is a good idea and I am saving up the money as we speak.

So with the requirement that Dot5 be flushed and replaced once a year (this seemed to be the unanimous consensus as how to correct the problem of moisture pooling in the wheel cylinders with Dot5) I decided to go with Dot4 for its extra durability over Dot3 but lower cost and maintenance than Dot5.

If I am getting a rusted wheel cylinder every few years with Dot3, that dissipates moisture throughout the system, I can imagine how many additional wheel cylinders I would have to buy with moisture pooling from Dot5.

Oh, and I save all of my old rusted cylinders. No use wasting new ones by having them bored and sleeved when the old ones are Made in U.S.A. and already bought and paid for.
