I have heard from engineering friends that a straight 6 is the most naturally balanced engine configuration. And, I believe the 265 truck engines were balanced at the factory, which would smooth them out even more and probably negate the need for a harmonic balancer. A V-8 is not nearly so naturally balanced and so must have a harmonic balancer in order to run really smooth.
