the pintle hitch is in correct position in Tom's picture, yes the release is on the underside as this was military standard from the 1/2t, thru 1 1/2T military Dodges as it made routing a cable or rope easier to the drivers area in order to jettison the towed trailer while in motion in combat situations, it was also protocol to not attach safety chains when operating in combat areas, international, chevrolets, gmcs, scout cars, half tracks and other vehicles had similar arrangements to remote release. In many cases they were towing munitions or fuel supplies and it wasn't a very good idea to be attached to a cargo like that when there are explosions all around you! If you look at the construction of the pintle, it's load bearing are is the bottom leg, the upper leg is not as heavy construction.
