If the valves in the fuel pump are starting to go, then an inline check valve is a temporary fix. The valves will continue to deteriorate to the point where the pump will no longer function. If the pump is that old, or even from the 80's, it's time to replace it. The rubber parts in old fuel pumps are not designed to work with modern gasoline (added alcohol), and tend to fail quickly. Sometimes they just leak, other times they dump gasoline into the oil pan, diluting the engine oil and causing a lot of trouble.
If everything is in good condition in the fuel system, you "should" be able to prime the pump by cranking the engine. But it's hard on the starter and battery, and I'm doubtful that 56 year old truck will have a fuel system without issues. I sometimes loosen the fuel line at the carburetor and put 1-2 lbs of air in the gas tank to push the fuel through the pump. It usually starts right up after that.
