A-pillar holes

The photo is looking at the passenger side A-pillar close to where it meets the floorpan whilst looking through a hole in the bottom of the floorpan. You are on the floor looking at the floorpan, but the floorpan has a hole in. it. Don't try to orient your view with the horizontal 2x2 in the right half of the photo. That is a piece a welded in the door opening to provide support and keep the cab from twisting, buckling, distorting, etc..

There are rectangular holes in an interior portion of the A-pillar, a portion of which I cut and have to replace. What are the rectangular holes for? And do I need to cut one into the replacement metal?

And try not to worry too much about the fuzzy horizontal water heater in the background. I rotated the photo so that your brain would not have too struggle against itself for orientation. In reality, the cab is on it's back, whereas the photo makes it look like it is right side up.
