Like has been said...... there is a fairly thick diameter aluminum rope in the bead. The aluminum material in the rope shrinks over time and locks that split ring on tight. The shrunken rope holds that bead on way stronger than the rust!! I cut similar to your effort. I see you started a cut at the bead, like you i stopped. Then I sharpened an old screwdriver or chisel and cut the thick aluminum rope. The rubber dropped off as soon as the cord was cut.
