Isn’t there a removable plug in the head that you can put a rod down into, maybe check with a dial indicator.
Or, on a V8 you can use a piston stop tool to stop the piston as you turn it by hand (gently) until it stops. Mark the balancer then turn it the other way until it stops again, and mark it. TDC is exactly b/t the two marks.
I don’t know it there is a piston stop tool for these engines but you could find something to thread into the plug hole....
