To me it is to lessen the chance of shorting the wrench to ground. I was watching our Bus mech change Battery's out and he was removing the Positive first! I told him do the negative first you can bump the frame and not weld the wench to it and possibly blow up the battery! He said don't tell me what to do I know how! Well he shorted out the wrench and there was a big flash! He blamed it on me for watching??? Negative off first, Positive on first safest way to remove one unless your Positive Ground then do it the other way.
