At about 155f, red rust turns into black/blue rust. The pertinent part is that black iron oxide is smaller than red iron oxide, so things get loose.Red heat should not be rquired, but the steel does swell with the heat, further compressing the rust.

That is the chemistry used in Belgian Rust Bluing on some of the finest shotguns. I did it on my Savage 721.
