I kept that in mind on the trip to Reno, and kept hoping for better mileage on the flat stretches through the desert. Never went over 60 mph. Bought gas in Idaho, Oregon, and Nevada. Never a bit of difference in the mileage. Never have tuned up this motor or even checked the compression since it seems to run fine. It's one of the earliest 225s, without electronic ignition. Pretty sure it has a road draft tube rather than PCV as well.

I do know there's a difference between Washington and Idaho gas because when I used to drive my '67 Chevy 1/2 ton back and forth all the time I found I could run more spark advance on Idaho gas than Washington gas, so I'd keep a wrench on the dashboard and adjust the distributor as needed.

The D300 has siped 17.5s, with dualies in the rear. One issue is that all the rear tires are slow leakers, and with dualies you don't notice it, so I have to remember to check before heading out on any major trip. That would certainly hurt the mileage when they're mis-matched. Dana 70 rear end. Tag says it's supposed to be limited-slip but I'm not sure it works.
