I've watched it form, and it's always worst in the early morning. What happens is iron gets cold overnight. Then the sun hits the sunny parts of the valley and evaporates the dew off the plants, which drives it into the shady side of the valley and onto anything cold. Eventually, by the end of the day, the sun may hit the iron and warm it up, but that just drives air out of enclosed compartments without drying out any water that's condensed within them. When when it cools off, the air in the compartments shrinks and draws in moist air from outside. It's this daily "breathing in" of moisture, which condenses inside and can't get out, that fills up engines and gearboxes with water. I don't know any solution other than heated indoor storage for everything.
