The mixture screw issue sounds like a plugged passageway in the carb. You should be able to turn in the screw until the engine dies. You should be able to back it out until the rpm starts to drop. Adjust the mixture screw back and forth until you find the point of highest idle and that should be good.

Get a vacuum gauge and follow the instructions that come with it. Vacuum tests can tell you a lot on how the engine is running. Well worth the money you Paul for a gauge.
