White oak was used for so many applications due to it's resistance to rot. Maybe redwood, but even today's redwood doesn't last like it did 50 years ago. You could probably treat the fir after you scribed it to fit, but some of the preservatives will attack the metal on your frame. Rubber would probably hold water between it and the wood.
For all these reasons, I used 3/8" steel plates to strap the bed to the frame.
I set mine where I did to facilitate loading and unloading firewood, etc. The only time it's been too close is with a load of green birch about 1 1/2' above the cab. Or a full load of sand.
