I have 3" clearance between the bed wood and the tires. I deliberately spaced the cross members so they would clear the tires. My error in calculation was the side channels. With a very heavy load the channel rubs the top of the tire, because the clearance is only 1 1/2". If the bed was overall 6" or 8" wider it would likely never rub.
