I would suspect a vaccum leak as well, but does it make the same noise in neutral with clutch out? Maybe the noise is still there when you accelerate but you just can't hear it for all the other noise?
Thermostat might not be opening correctly. Don't run without it though-- the water will pass thru the radiator too fast to allow the water to cool down.
