Like you I was very skeptical, until I had problems when living in the tropics. I pulled the t/stat and ran without it but found the engine still running too hot, put my other hat on and thought about it for a while, then took the guts out of the t/stat and put the body back in. This restricted the flow a bit, but duplicated what the t/stat would do when fully open and this worked OK.
