I've heard that theory before. Until I see it on Myth Busters or see some scientific support for that theory, I'm skeptical of its accuracy.
Under that theory, when the thermostat is fully open under the most extreme heating conditions, the radiator is actually less efficient. I doubt that the thermostat is a precisely calibrated restriction.
For the time being, I'm going to chalk it up as an, "old mechanic's tale".
