The trailer you describe is too light weight. He is already over the trailer capacity with an empty truck. No safety margin. Go for at least a 10,000 trailer or 12,000# rated trailer. I will be a broken record. "Do not do it." I would rather be 2,000# under the rated trailer capacity. Eric you have towed enough to realize that this would be a dangerous set up. Tell the guy to spend a few extra bucks and do it right and he will not end up with a line of lawyers at his door and an empty bank account for the rest of his life.

As to a winch, I have seen sockets for a winch built into the front of the tilt section. Basically it is a trailer hitch receiver that allows you to mount a portable winch that is designed plug into a trailer hitch receiver. I will eventually go that route for my trailer then I can use it on my truck also.
