I'm even nervous about jackstands at anywhere near their "rated" load. I prefer 6x6 or RR tie cribbing, 2 pcs on each layer, if I have to get under seriously heavy stuff. Wood has the great advantage of crushing slowly when overloaded rather than suddenly bending or shattering like metal or masonry. Obviously a stick of firewood standing on end is not what I mean by "cribbing".
I narrowly escaped when my "1000 pound" transmission jack slowly collapsed and fell over as it took up the load of a 500 lb transfer case. It gave in on the side next to me but I rolled out of the way before the transfer case fell off it. Since then I tend to derate "Harbor Freight pounds" by about a factor of 4.
