the foot operated starters are more reliable than solenoid. whichever way I would always go with that type of starter. i have driven trucks quite a distance on the foot operated style in a pinch (out of gas and wet distributor in mud hole). starter barely gets hot. try that with a solenoid set up and it would get toasty real fast. more resistance
