Thanks, Keith. I'm not really worried about contamination. It's just that I thought I remembered seeing a repair manual discuss the use of a packing material within the bearing retainer, so I figured it would be a good idea to do it while I have the opportunity. But since there appears to be no such packing (just a figment of my imagination), I won't concern myself with it any longer. If these trucks have been fine without packing or any sort of front seal for 80 years and countless miles in all kinds of conditions, I figure mine will be just fine from here forward too.

But you're right - if I get into high water, then that's a different story and I'll need to change out fluids, etc.
