Lol! Thanks, Vaughn! If there were never any such seals or packing in these specific transmissions from the factory (or later retrofit for these units), then I won't worry about it. I'll just make sure the bellhousing is well-sealed.
It's just so strange, I have this vivid memory of seeing an image from an old manual, showing some kind of packing (but not a seal). In any case, I can't find it now, and if anyone would know about it, you probably would, so I must have made it up. Also, it doesn't exactly make sense to have packing riding against a spinning shaft, as it probably wouldn't last long or stay put too well. Plus, there's hardly any room for it in there.
