I remember asking the same hood question years ago and somebody on the forum (probably Norm?) told me about shimming it...I was dubious. It worked great and it was sooo simple.

Neat rig. I think nothing is cooler than a hard working truck like that. Are you just chasing the gremlins out or are you going to restore it?
