OT - anyone have experience with casting aluminum?

I have designed a part that I would like to have cast in aluminum. I am having difficulty locating a foundry that can/will take on the job.

I had thought briefly about casting the part myself and have done some initial research on the subject - but there is no substitute for practical experience so I thought I would ask you guys first.

What books would recommend on the subject and how steep is the learning curve to achieve an acceptable casting?
