I just disassembled my MU-2, replaced the gaskets/seals, and reassembled the gear box. In the sludge on the bottom of the box was about 1/4 inch of brass dust mixed with the black sludge. The main brass gear appears in good shape.
My question is what should I put in the box to minimize further wear of the large brass gear? Steve @ Vintage Powerwagons mentioned a special grease available only at John Deere tractor suppliers.."corn????" grease. Does anyone know if this is safe for that $200.00 jewel in the heart of the MU-2? I can understand how the grease would provide excellent lubrication, but would hate to find that it is also leaching /weakening the already soft brass. Thanks in advance.
p.s. The keys on the main shaft that the wire rope spool rides on over which the engagement clutch rides were both badly fractured..any one seen this before?
