A plow pipe sounds like a great idea, especially if your ground isn't yet frozen. Wheels or skids will just grind into the mud. :(
I've used the heavy rubber wear bars that mount in place of the cutter bar (1-1/2" thick), and I like them a lot, but I'm not sure it would help with soft ground. Probably just dig in as well.
