Fuel Pump for 265

I'm swapping the 251 on my 66 WM300 for a 265. Can I use the fuel pump from the 251? How can I test that old fuel pump? It ran on the old engine but after sitting, it took a lot of cranking to get fuel to the carb. Is that indication that the check valve in the pump is bad? Can I rebuild the 251 pump? Thx
