I have collected 1940's and 1950's oil filter master catalogs, with cross reference lists, from following filter manufacturers (all Weatherly Index #660): Deluxe Products Corporation, Wix Corporation, Fram, Purolator Products, Inc., Cyclone Filter Corporation, Gould-National, Bowes Seal Fast, and Hastings Manufacturing Company.
From these, I have compiled a list of one hundred and eleven different filter part numbers, from sixty-six separate manufactures, that cross reference as replacements to the Deluxe model JC cotton covered media (sock type) cartridge. The overwhelming vast majority of these are long out of production. Of these one hundred and eleven, five are metal covered pleated paper cartridges.
I have also collected thirty-seven different versions of these cotton covered media (sock type) cartridges from twenty-six of the manufactures on my list, and can verify that they all fit the Deluxe JC canister. I also have found five of the metal covered pleated paper cartridges: APCO #AP-230, Atlas #T80P, Fram #C-120P, Hastings #501-M, and a Purolator T-1P.
The "sock type" sealed at the top of the tube found in the center of the Deluxe JC canister, as well as all around the bore of the canister. Both the upper seal to the tube, as well as the seal all around the bore of the canister, is created by tightening down the lid on the canister. The oil enters the central tube at the bottom of the canister, once inside it exits the tube near slightly above bottom of the canister and has to flow through the filter to exit back to the engine. If the filter should become clogged, there is a spring pressurized relief valve at the top of the central tube, and the oil can then exit through this valve and completely bypass the cartridge if needed.
The metal covered pleated paper cartridges (all from competitors of Deluxe, and apparently deemed by their manufactures as being superior to their own cotton covered media cartridges) sealed both at the bottom of the central tube in the canister, and near the top of the canister. The lower seal was below the hole in the tube that allow oil to enter into the cartridge. The upper seal is in the same location around the central tube where the "sock type" seals. So both styles force all of the oil to pass through the filer regardless of whether it is of the cotton covered media or the metal covered pleated paper design. Unless, of course one should become fully plugged with contaminants in which case the pressure will rise and force the canisters relief valve to open and allow the oil to bypass the filter.
It appears that the very best of these metal covered pleated paper designed cartridges, that I have found to date, is the Hastings #501-M. It is shaped like a used "sock type" after it has been removed from the canister. I have attached a photo here.
