I have always had the same problem on my two trucks with stock tanks and filler necks. One with the stock bedsides, and the other with a flatbed.

The biggest problem is that modern gas pumps pump a lot faster than gas pumps from the 1940's and 1950's. Even the modern gas pumps of 1980 (when I bought my first Power-Wagon) didn't pump as fast as current ones. Here is how I get around it:

1) I frequent gas stations that have their lot on a slight grade. I then always park with the filler neck on the uphill side of the grade.

2) If I know of one pump that is somewhat out of adjustment, and is pumping slower than the rest, that is the one I use.

3) If I know that one pump nozzle is getting worn and has lost the "hair-trigger" reaction on the automatic shut-off, that is the one I use.

4). I try to place the nozzle into the filler neck upside down if I can, and all of the way into the filler neck, in order to shoot the gasoline straight horizontally into the tank if possible.

5) Otherwise, barring the other options, I barely place the end of the nozzle into the filler neck and watch the gasoline back up the filler neck and feather the trigger in response.

There is only about a 4-inch section of horizontal hose between the filler neck and the tank inlet. It is very hard to get much of a beneficial angle on this hose and still maintain a good seal at either end.

After 43 years, I find that the extended time it takes to slowly fill the tank feels natural now. It also gives me more time to answer all the questions that inevitably arise as other patrons gravitate to the old Power-Wagons.
