I use a 100A 200 piv diode in line with the charging system feed to the 12V aux fitting on my trailer socket the cathode end connects towards the alt, the anode connects to the aux battery the diode will block any current trying to be drawn to the vehicle charging system but will allow up to 100 amps charging current towards the aux. battery with a #10 feed wire. I use a 50 amp circuit breaker on the aux battery side to prevent hard draw of current in case the winch shorts out or other catastrophe. the commercial battery isolators are simply two diodes cathode to cathode with the anode of one to the main battery and the other anode to the aux battery, they use a reverse polarity diode that has the cathode on the std end thus when installed on a heat sink the heat sink becomes hot and is hooked to the alt output, then the top post of each diode goes to each battery, the heatsink must be isolated from ground or te vehicles negative. other than that they are about $25.00 to build.
