yes, the aux battery acts as a buffer and since it is closer to the load with larger conductor the charge line is pretty much limited to alt output, granted newer alts can develop 150-200 amps, but the battery absorbs most of the load the diode itself prevents overcurrent draw also by being polarized. remember there is a fairly short duty cycle on electric winches (not very many people pay attention to that) so if the winch is operated within its duty cycle, the battery will replenish while giving the winch a cool down break thus the load on the charging system will be nominal, not to mention using a high quality, high amperage severe duty battery helps also. another option is the use of a cut out switch that would isolate the aux battery in case you are worried about excessive draw, that's the purpose of the cb as it will automatically reset and limits draw to 50 amps of course depending on length a #8 or #6 awg feed wouldn't hurt but in a dc 12v application #10 will handle 40-50A for short duration under 10 ft.
