That is the adjusting screw for the ring gear thrust block. Is the weld on it intact? Is it leaking a lot? If not leaking badly, just run it till spring and check the oil level regularly. If the weld is broken or missing, it's easy to set the proper clearance, which is 1/8 turn out from when the block touches the ring gear.
