This is what I made to remove my differential cap. Its 3" Sch 40 pipe, about 5" long. I'd be happy to loan it to someone that needs it.
Also remember that common solder today is totally different from what they used in 1945. My guess is they were using 50/50 lead-antimony, but I don't now. You will grossly overheat the case if you use modern day plumbing solder. Like Chewie said, an infrared thermometer is the way to go.
