Is this the trans you're looking at? If it is, it's a military and the PTO is only front driven, not an NP420

This trans is also a spur gear and has the driven shaft for front/rear driven PTO shafts

You can't tell just by looking at gears if the trans is good. Some gears have bronze bushing that can be worn out, shafts could have bad bearing surfaces, galling, or bad pitting, or the bearing surface can be worn past the max. wear limit for the shaft bearing surface. If you plan on buying a used transmission, you better plan on a complete rebuild or your chances are you're going to have a noisy transmission.
