I had to replace the u-joints in a pto shaft to my front winch some years ago. I could not find u-joints that would fit at any automotive store. My current boss used to run a driveline business. He got joints for me. They were agricultural joints. Which makes sense.

The civilian Power-Wagon used pto gear boxes supplied by Detroit Harvester who was an agricultural manufacturer. If I remember correctly the u-joints that fit were produced by Blood Bros. Another agricultural manufacturer.

I have several square pto shafts for post hole diggers and other farm equipment. These tend to be from the 1940's and 1950's. Hex pto shafts tended to come later. In fact, our company currently has an order to produce several different hex pto shafts in large quantities for a local agricultural supplier.

Since the round pto shafts used to drive the winch on a Power-Wagon from all accounts appeared to have been supplied by agricultural vendors, it is no surprise that a factory round shaft may have been replaced with a square shaft of the same dimensions (also agricultural supplied) at some point in time during a truck's life.
