We're a throw-away society. Things are made to last just so long, and when they break, toss it and buy new. You don't see many old clunkers on the road like we use to, leases make it easy to always have a late model vehicle. Then there is the balance of keeping the cost down while delivering fairly decent product knowing it will get used and abused and replaced with new in a few years. Not many people buy with the intent of keeping a product for as long as they can, so that drives the market. The mom & pop shops probably have an edge over the big guys when it comes to quality in products.
