I broke my tires loose from the wheels using a cheapo Harbor freight hydraulic press. After the wheels were broken loose they could be de-mounted using tire irons. It was a bit of work as the tires had been on for a few decades. The good news was that after sandblasting and powder coating the wheels, the new tires were really easy to mount.
I got rid of the carcasses at the local mosquito control board which hosts a no-questions-asked used tire pick up once a year.
